The apartment

A quiet address on the lake's quiet side

Mandello del Lario sits on the eastern shore of Lake Como — close enough to Bellagio, Varenna and Como to make each one an easy half-day, and far enough from the crowds to come home to somewhere quiet. This 74 m² apartment, completed in 2026, occupies the first floor of a small villa with its own pool and gated parking, a five-minute walk from the water.

Most of this lake quiets down once the season ends — shutters closed until spring. Mandello doesn't. Restaurants stay open through the winter, a new QC Terme spa is planned for the shore, and the town runs on its own rhythm, not a tourist calendar. A motorway runs along this side of the lake and trains connect in several directions, so a long weekend here works as well in November as it does in August.

The day starts on the 35 m² terrace, with coffee in the first light over the Grigna. It ends there too — a glass of wine in the shade as the heat fades and the peaks turn pink. One bedroom, one bathroom, air conditioning throughout, views in every direction. Built for two: no children, no shared walls with strangers, nothing to share but the view.

Getting around

Bellagio, Varenna and Milano — closer than you think

The passenger ferry leaves from the pier in front of town: Varenna in around fifteen minutes, Bellagio in well under an hour — both an easy outing with time for lunch and a walk before the boat home. Mandello's railway station is an eight-minute walk, with direct trains to Milano Centrale in under an hour. Milan's airports (Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo) connect easily from Northern Europe, so the journey door-to-door is shorter than it looks on a map.

Eating & drinking

Cook if you want to. Most people don't.

The kitchen is fully equipped — hob, dishwasher, the works — for a quiet breakfast on the terrace or a night in. But Mandello’s restaurants are part of the holiday: lakefront cafés, easy trattorias and a handful of proper dinner spots are within walking distance. Villa Lario Resort adds a more polished option nearby, from relaxed aperitivo and light bites at the Grill & Lounge to a special dinner at Amandus. And when the passenger boat is running, Varenna and Bellagio add another dozen harbour-front kitchens within reach for dinner.

Our Story

A Norwegian family, a detour, and a lake that changed everything.

We have always loved to travel. As a family from Norway, we have explored the world from east to west — but Italy kept calling us back. The food, the light, the pace of life. Something about it felt like home.

Mandello del Lario was never the plan. After a ski holiday in the Dolomites, we stopped for a couple of nights at Lake Como before heading back north. We found Mandello almost by chance — a working town with a real community, free of tourist crowds, yet perfectly positioned in the centre of the lake. The cycling routes, the mountain trails, the vineyards, the ferries gliding across the water in the morning. The feeling that you had found a place most people simply pass through.

So we decided to stay — not just as visitors, but as hosts. Lake Como Terrace Suite was completed in January 2026. We built it the way we would want to find it: thoughtfully designed, with a private terrace large enough to actually live on. We hope you love it as much as we do.
